Hail-Damaged Garage Door Repair in Lubbock, TX
Hail-dented doors get new panels if the model is still made, or a new door if not. Here's how to decide and handle the claim.
- Free to use
- One local company, not a list
- No obligation to hire
Referral website, not the contractor. How it works
A hail-damaged garage door can be fixed by replacing only the dented sections if your model is still made; otherwise, the whole door is replaced. Homewyse estimates about $440 to $725 per panel (2026, national; varies by ZIP), and Angi puts a new door at about $754 to $1,707, so three or four dented panels can tip the math toward a new door.
South Plains Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. If a storm dented your door, send a request with the form, and describe the damage.
Hail on the South Plains
Lubbock gets large hail often. Recent examples:
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| June 2019 | Baseball- to softball-size hail in Slaton, Wilson and east of New Deal; quarter- to golf-ball-size hail in Lubbock | National Weather Service Lubbock |
| May 2020 | Baseball-size hail in south-central Lubbock | National Weather Service Lubbock |
| June 2025 | Hail up to 2.5 inches reported in Wolfforth during a supercell; a 109 mph gust at the Smyer mesonet station | Texas Tech National Wind Institute |
Hail that size dents steel garage doors, cracks or shatters glass panels, and can bend the horizontal struts that keep a wide door straight.
Cosmetic damage or functional damage?
The first question is whether the door still works properly. That decides how urgent the repair is and, in many cases, how an insurance adjuster views it.
Usually cosmetic:
- Small to medium dents spread across the panels
- Chipped paint without bare, exposed steel
- The door opens and closes smoothly and seals at the bottom
Functional (needs attention soon):
- Cracked or split panels, especially at the hinge lines
- A section that bows, binds or catches as it rolls into the curve of the track
- Bent or loose reinforcing struts
- Broken window inserts
- Rollers or tracks knocked out of line
- The opener strains or the door reverses since the storm
A door that binds puts extra strain on the springs and opener, which can turn a panel problem into a broken spring or an off-track door. If the door is binding, stop using it until it's checked.
Panel replacement vs. a new door
Replacing panels works when:
- Only one or two sections are damaged.
- The manufacturer still makes your exact model, size, design and color.
- The rest of the door, including tracks and springs, is in good condition.
One drawback: a new panel may not match the color of older, sun-faded panels exactly. Ask the company whether it can match the color or whether you'll need to paint the whole door.
Replacing the door works better when:
- Three or more sections are damaged.
- Your model has been discontinued, so matching panels aren't available.
- The door was already old, uninsulated or worn.
- You want a heavier, insulated door that will handle the next storm better.
Some homeowners use a hail claim to upgrade from thin single-layer steel to an insulated door. If your insurer pays for a like-for-like door, ask the company what the upgrade costs beyond that.
Choosing a more hail-resistant door
No garage door is hail-proof. Ask the company whether a door has had any hail or impact testing, and what it showed. What helps:
- Thicker steel. Gauge numbers run backward: a lower number means thicker steel.
- An insulated core. Two- and three-layer doors with foam between steel skins are stiffer than single-layer doors.
- A textured finish. Embossed wood-grain patterns hide small dings better than smooth panels.
- Fewer or smaller windows. Glass is the first thing hail breaks.
Ask the company to compare the gauge and construction of the doors it quotes. See garage door installation for more on door types.
Insurance claims for hail damage
The Texas Department of Insurance's hail and windstorm tips say to:
- Take pictures and video of the damage, and make a list of everything damaged inside and outside the house.
- Prevent more damage where you can do it safely.
- Contact your insurance company to start the claim.
Check your deductible. TDI explains that some policies use a percentage deductible rather than a flat dollar amount. A percentage deductible is figured from your home's insured value, so it can be larger than the cost of a garage door by itself. If the hail also damaged your roof, the garage door may be part of a larger claim.
Get a written estimate. Ask the company for an itemized estimate for panels or a new door, which you can share with your adjuster. Keep copies of everything.
We aren't insurance agents and can't tell you what your policy covers. Your agent or insurer can.
Watch out for storm chasers
After a big hailstorm, out-of-town contractors go door to door. TDI's garage door storm-repair guide advises getting at least three written bids, avoiding door-to-door contractors, and being wary of anyone who takes cash only or wants payment before the materials are on site. Don't sign a contract on the spot.
Questions to ask the company
- Can you replace only the damaged sections, and is my model still made?
- Will a new panel match my door's color, or will it need painting?
- If I replace the door, what gauge and insulation are you quoting?
- Will you provide an itemized estimate for my insurance claim?
- What warranty comes with the panels or door, and with the labor?

Common questions
Will homeowners insurance pay for a hail-damaged garage door?
It can, if the damage came from a covered storm and the cost is more than your deductible. Some policies use a percentage deductible, which can be large. Read your policy's declarations page or call your agent. Wear and tear, rust and old damage generally aren't covered.
Can a dented garage door be repaired instead of replaced?
Dents in a steel door usually can't be pulled out cleanly the way car dents sometimes can. The options are to live with cosmetic dents, replace the damaged sections if your model is still made, or replace the door. A door that still opens smoothly and seals well may only have cosmetic damage.
How soon after a hailstorm should I get my door looked at?
Soon, for two reasons. A damaged door can bind and strain the springs and opener, and the Texas Department of Insurance tells homeowners to photograph damage and contact their insurer to start a claim. Take photos the day of the storm, even if the repair waits.
Should I hire a contractor who knocks on my door after a storm?
Be careful. The Texas Department of Insurance's garage door storm-repair guide advises avoiding door-to-door contractors and being wary of anyone who wants cash only or payment before materials are on site. Get written bids from companies you contact yourself.
