Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

If your garage door is off track or a cable has snapped, stop using the door, unplug the opener, and keep people and cars clear. HomeAdvisor puts cable replacement at about $75 to $200.

South Plains Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. For help, send a request with the form.

Door stuck open, or a car trapped inside? Leave the door where it is, don't pull the red emergency release, and send a request with the form.

What to do right now

An off-track door is unstable. Its weight may be hanging from one cable, or partly held by a spring under tension. Until it's fixed:

  1. Don't press the opener button. The opener can pull the door further out of the track or bend the panels.
  2. Unplug the opener so no one triggers it by accident with a remote or keypad.
  3. Keep kids, pets and cars away from the door and the area under it.
  4. Don't pull the emergency release if the door is open or hanging crooked. That can let the door drop.
  5. Don't try to force rollers back in with a hammer or pry bar, and don't touch the cables, springs or bottom brackets.

DASMA's homeowner safety tips say spring systems "should be repaired only by trained professionals," and that cables should be replaced only by a trained technician. If your car is trapped inside, say so in your request.

Why garage doors come off track

Cause What you'll see Notes
Broken lift cable Door hangs crooked; one side drops; a loose cable dangles Often happens when a spring breaks or a cable frays at the bottom bracket
Broken spring Door drops or won't lift; cables go slack and jump off the drums See garage door spring repair
Car or object bumped the door Bottom section bent; track pushed out of line Can happen even at low speed
Worn or broken rollers Rollers wobble, grind or pop out of the track Dust and grit speed up bearing wear
Loose or bent track Gaps between the track and rollers; brackets pulling from the wall Vibration loosens bolts over time
Wind on an open door Door bowed or pushed out of the track A risk during strong storm gusts
Obstruction Door stopped on something and the opener kept pushing Usually bends the bottom section

How Lubbock conditions play a part

Dust in the rollers and tracks. National Weather Service storm reports describe "blinding blowing dust" during Lubbock wind events. Fine grit gets packed into the track and into roller bearings, where it grinds them down. Worn rollers wobble, bind and eventually jump the track. Wipe out the tracks after a dust storm, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.

Strong gusts. The Weather Service recorded an 80 mph downburst in northwest Lubbock in November 2015. A door left open in a gust can be pushed hard enough to bend track or pop rollers. A closed door that takes a hard wind load can bow at the center. Close the door when a storm is coming.

Temperature swings. Swings between hot afternoons and cold nights make metal expand and contract. Over time that can loosen track bolts and brackets. Ask the company to check and tighten them during any repair visit.

Cables, rollers and tracks: what gets fixed

Lift cables. These steel cables run from the bottom corners of the door to drums on the torsion bar (or through pulleys on extension-spring doors). They lift the door with the springs' help. A frayed or broken cable can't be spliced; it's replaced, and both sides are usually done together so they wear evenly. Because cables are tied to spring tension, this is a job for a trained technician.

Rollers. A sectional door rides on a pair of rollers at every section. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are usually quieter. Ask the company which rollers it recommends for dusty conditions. The bottom roller brackets are under spring tension and should only be removed by a trained technician.

Tracks. A slightly bent track can sometimes be straightened. A kinked or badly bent section is usually replaced. The vertical tracks also need to be plumb and the right distance from the door.

Drums and bearings. On torsion systems, a cable that jumped its drum can damage the drum or the end bearings, so ask to have them checked.

"My garage door won't open": safe checks first

Check these first. They're safe and cover many no-open problems:

  • Is the manual lock engaged? Many doors have a slide lock on the inside of a section.
  • Is the opener disconnected? If someone pulled the emergency release, the opener runs but the door doesn't move.
  • Is there power? Check the outlet, breaker and any GFCI outlet in the garage.
  • Are the safety sensor lenses clean and lined up? Dust on the lenses can stop a door from closing.
  • Is the remote battery dead? Try the wall button.

If the door looks crooked, a cable is loose, or you heard a bang, skip the troubleshooting and send a request with the form. Opener problems are covered on the garage door opener repair page.

What off-track and cable repair costs

National cost guides checked in October 2026 give these ranges:

Job Typical national range Source
Cable replacement About $75 to $200 HomeAdvisor
General garage door repair About $235 to $695; most pay around $403 Thumbtack (updated July 2026)
Simple off-track realignment Often about an hour of labor Raynor Door Company (Chicago-area installer)

The price goes up when track sections, the bottom panel or several rollers need replacing, or when a broken spring caused the problem. Pricing and scheduling come from the company. See the garage door repair cost guide for more.

Questions to ask the company

  • What caused the door to come off track, and will it happen again?
  • Are you replacing both cables, and what about the rollers?
  • Is any track section bent badly enough to need replacing?
  • Did the springs, drums or bearings take damage?
  • What warranty comes with the parts and labor?

Common questions

Can I push my garage door back onto the track myself?

It isn't worth the risk. An off-track door can be held up by a single cable or partly by a spring under tension, and it can fall or swing without warning. DASMA's homeowner safety tips say cables should be replaced only by a trained technician. Keep people and cars away from the door and get help.

How much does it cost to fix a garage door that came off the track?

It depends on what caused it. Raynor Door Company, a Chicago-area garage door installer, says a straightforward realignment often takes about an hour. If cables, rollers or track sections are bent or broken, the price goes up. HomeAdvisor puts cable replacement at about $75 to $200.

Why is my garage door so loud?

Worn rollers, dry hinges and loose hardware are the usual causes. Around Lubbock, dust and grit in the roller bearings speed up the wear. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are usually quieter than worn steel rollers. A loud door can also mean the springs are out of balance, so ask the company to check.

My car hit the garage door. What should I do?

Stop using the door and don't try to force it open or closed. A bump from a car can bend the bottom section, pull the track away from its brackets or knock rollers out. Leave the opener off, keep people clear, and have the door inspected.
