Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

A garage door tune-up is a maintenance visit where a technician inspects, lubricates, adjusts and tests the door and opener. HomeGuide puts a standard visit at about $100 to $150, and a premium package at about $150 to $250.

South Plains Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. To book a tune-up, send a request with the form.

What a tune-up should cover

HomeGuide lists what a standard tune-up includes. The right-hand column is why each item matters, with DASMA's guidance where it applies.

Tune-up item Why it matters
Inspect springs DASMA calls springs "arguably the most important and most dangerous part" of the door; they wear out, and older springs should be inspected and replaced if needed
Inspect lift cables DASMA says frayed or worn cables "are in danger of breaking" and should be replaced only by a trained technician
Inspect rollers, hinges and tracks Worn rollers and loose track cause noise and can let the door jump the track
Lubricate moving parts Rollers, hinges, springs and bearings run quieter and with less strain
Tighten hardware Daily use loosens bolts on hinges, track brackets and the opener mount
Balance test DASMA's checklist says safe operation "is dependent on a balanced door," and its safety tips say an out-of-balance spring system causes premature wear on other parts
Test sensors and auto-reverse DASMA says photo eyes belong no higher than six inches off the floor, and a door that doesn't reverse readily is a dangerous setting
Clean tracks Removes packed grit that grinds rollers
Check seals and panels Catches cracked sections and worn weatherstripping
Written report A list of what needs attention, so you can decide what to fix and when

HomeGuide says premium packages add things like replacing worn rollers, hinges or weather seals, plus deeper opener diagnostics. Compare what's in each package rather than the label.

Why maintenance matters more on the South Plains

Dust. Weather Service storm reports describe "blinding blowing dust" during Lubbock wind events. That grit ends up in roller bearings, hinges and the opener rail, and on the sensor lenses. A cleaning and lubrication visit removes it before it wears parts out.

Hail season. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center logged 419 Lubbock County hail reports from 1996 through 2025, and 82% of them fell in April, May and June. A door that binds after a storm strains the springs and opener, so it helps to know the door was sound going in. See the Lubbock County hail calendar.

Cold snaps. Lubbock's record low is -17°F. Cold thickens old lubricant and stiffens rollers, so a door that's out of balance struggles most on the first hard-freeze mornings.

When to book a tune-up in Lubbock

Timing Why
Late winter (February to March) Before the April-to-June peak in hail reports and the spring wind
Early fall (October) Before the first hard freeze, and after a summer of heat on seals and dust in the tracks
After any big hailstorm Check for bent sections, struts and track, and photograph damage for insurance; see hail-damaged garage doors
When you move into a house You don't know when the springs and cables were last checked

For checks you can do yourself between visits, see the season-by-season list in how Lubbock weather wears out garage doors.

What a tune-up costs

National figures checked in October 2026:

Service Typical national range Source
Standard tune-up About $100 to $150 HomeGuide
Premium tune-up package About $150 to $250 HomeGuide
Maintenance visit, every two years About $100 to $200 Angi
Common repairs found during a tune-up About $150 to $350 on average HomeGuide
Two springs on one door, if needed About $150 to $350 HomeAdvisor

HomeGuide also lists emergency or after-hours service as a cost factor; a tune-up is never urgent, so book it at a regular time. Pricing and scheduling come from the company. Repair prices for individual parts are in the garage door repair cost guide.

How to avoid paying for things you don't need

Tune-ups often turn up recommended repairs, so go in prepared. HomeGuide's advice:

  • Ask for an itemized quote that separates labor, parts and fees, and ask exactly what the tune-up includes.
  • Ask what extra repairs might cost before the visit, and whether there's a trip or service-call fee.
  • Compare more than one company if you can.

And two of our own suggestions:

  • Ask to see the worn part. A frayed cable or a cracked roller is easy to show you.
  • Ask why, if springs are recommended. Springs wear out, but a working, balanced spring isn't automatically due. Ask the company to explain what it found.

What not to do yourself

You can lubricate, wipe sensor lenses and keep the tracks clean. DASMA says spring systems "should be repaired only by trained professionals," cables should be replaced only by a trained technician, and the bottom brackets are under extreme tension and should be loosened only by a trained door technician. Leave those to the tune-up.

Questions to ask the company

  • What exactly is included in the tune-up price?
  • Will you test the door's balance and the safety reverse, and show me the results?
  • Are any parts included, or are all parts extra?
  • Will I get a written list of what you found?

Common questions

How much is a garage door tune-up?

HomeGuide puts a standard tune-up at about $100 to $150 and a premium package at about $150 to $250. Angi suggests maintenance service every two years at about $100 to $200. These are national figures checked in October 2026; the company sets its own price.

What does a garage door tune-up include?

HomeGuide's list for a standard visit: inspecting springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks and the opener; lubricating moving parts; tightening hardware; a balance test; aligning and testing the safety sensors and auto-reverse; cleaning the tracks; checking seals and panels; and a written report of anything that needs repair.

Is a garage door tune-up worth it?

DASMA, the door industry's trade group, recommends an annual visit from a trained door technician on top of your own monthly checks, because parts wear out and break with daily use. A tune-up is also the cheapest time to find a frayed cable or a worn spring.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Sources differ. DASMA and HomeGuide say once a year; Angi says every two years. A door that's the family's main entrance, or one that sees a lot of dust, is a good candidate for yearly service.

How much does it cost to have a garage door lubricated?

Lubrication is part of a standard tune-up. If you do it yourself, Angi puts a can of garage door lubricant at about $7 to $10, and DASMA recommends a spray-on lubricant made for garage doors.
