Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

Garage door panel replacement means swapping one damaged section of a sectional door instead of buying a whole new door. Angi's 2026 data puts it at about $350 to $900, roughly $550 on average.

South Plains Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. To price a panel, send a request with the form, and mention your door's brand if you know it.

When one section can be replaced

Most garage doors on houses are sectional: four to six horizontal sections hinged together that roll up along a track, as Angi describes them. Each section can, in principle, come out on its own. Whether yours can depends on four things:

  • The door is sectional, not a one-piece tilt-up door. A one-piece door has nothing to swap.
  • The manufacturer still makes your section, in the same height, width, design and thickness.
  • The damage is limited to one or two sections.
  • The rest of the door is sound. Springs, cables, rollers and track that are worn out change the math.

DASMA's inspection checklist asks three questions about every section: is it free of fatigue, of cracking, and of separation of materials? A "no" on any of those, on any section, is worth a closer look.

Why Lubbock doors end up needing a new section

Cause What it looks like Usual outcome
Car, mower or trailer bump Bottom or second section pushed in; track out of line Dent repair if minor; new section if cracked or kinked
Hail Dents across several sections; broken window inserts See hail-damaged garage doors; often several sections at once
Wind on an open door Sections bowed or creased; door forced out of the track New section plus track and roller work
Crack at a hinge line Split steel or a hinge pulling loose Replace the section; the hinge needs solid metal
Rust or rot along the bottom edge Flaking steel or soft wood at the bottom section Replace the bottom section if the model is still made
Bowing on hot, sunny days Insulated door bulges outward, then settles Often not damage at all (see below)

Hail is the big one here. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center logged 419 hail reports in Lubbock County from 1996 through 2025, most in May and June; our Lubbock County hail calendar breaks them down by month. Wind matters too: the highest gust on record at Lubbock is 90 mph, and an open door takes that load across its whole face.

Not all bowing is damage. DASMA's technical sheet on thermal bowing says insulated doors built as a foam core between two skins bow when one face is much hotter than the other, and that this "is not considered a product defect." Dark doors facing the sun bow most. If your door bulges on hot afternoons and settles at night, ask about adding horizontal struts, which DASMA lists as the usual remedy, before paying for a new section.

Finding out whether your section is still made

Panel availability decides most of these jobs, so gather this before you call:

  1. Look for a manufacturer's label or sticker on the inside of the door, and photograph it.
  2. Measure the door's width and height, and the height of one section.
  3. Note the design: raised panel, flat, ribbed or carriage style, and the color.
  4. Check the thickness at the edge, and whether there's foam insulation inside.
  5. Count any window sections and note their layout.

With that, the company can usually tell you on the phone whether a matching section is likely to be available.

What panel replacement costs

National figures checked in October 2026:

Job Typical national range Source
Panel replacement, all door types About $350 to $900; about $550 average Angi
Panel on a sectional door About $250 to $500 Angi
One replacement panel About $440 to $725 Homewyse (2026, national; varies by ZIP)
Minor dent repair About $100 to $300 Angi
Whole new door, for comparison About $754 to $1,707 Angi

Angi splits a panel job into the panel itself (about $150 to $800) and labor (about $200 to $500), and notes that worn springs, cables or rollers found at the same time add to the bill. Pricing and scheduling come from the company.

Run the numbers when more than one section is damaged. Two or three sections at $350 or more each, plus labor, can land close to the price of a new door. Our new garage door cost guide breaks down what a whole door costs by size and material.

How a section swap usually goes

  1. Confirm the part. The company checks your door's maker and model and orders the matching section.
  2. Take the load off. The door is secured and the spring tension handled before anything comes apart. DASMA says bottom brackets are under extreme tension and should be loosened only by a trained door technician, which is why this isn't a homeowner job.
  3. Swap the section. Hinges and rollers move to the new section, or get replaced if worn.
  4. Reattach the opener. If the top section was replaced, the opener's reinforcement bracket has to go back on. DASMA notes that skipping that bracket can damage the door.
  5. Balance and test. The door should stay put halfway up when lifted by hand, and the opener's safety reverse should work.

Questions to ask the company

  • Is my exact section still made, and how long will it take to arrive?
  • Will the color match, or should I plan to paint the door?
  • Are the hinges and rollers on that section being replaced too?
  • Is the track straight, or did the impact bend it?
  • If more than one section is damaged, what would a new door cost by comparison?

Common questions

Can I replace just one panel on my garage door?

On a sectional door, usually yes, as long as the manufacturer still makes a section that matches your door's size, design and color. On a one-piece tilt-up door you can't. Angi notes that single-panel doors have to be replaced whole when they're damaged.

What is the average cost to replace a garage door panel?

Angi's 2026 figure is about $550 on average, with most homeowners paying $350 to $900; for sectional doors specifically it lists about $250 to $500. Homewyse estimates about $440 to $725 per panel (national default; varies by ZIP). Wood, custom and hard-to-match panels cost more.

Can you buy just a panel for a garage door?

Usually through a garage door dealer that carries your door's brand, and only once you know the manufacturer and model. Installing it is a different matter: the bottom section connects to the bottom brackets, which DASMA says are under extreme spring tension and should be loosened only by a trained door technician.

Will a new panel match the rest of my door?

The shape can match if the model is still made. The color may not, because older panels fade in strong sun. Ask the company whether it can match the color or whether the whole door should be painted afterward.

I backed into my garage door. Does the panel need replacing?

Not always. Angi puts minor dent repair at about $100 to $300. But a car bump can also bend the track, pop rollers out or kink the bottom section, so stop using the door until it's checked. If the section is cracked or bent at a hinge line, replacement is the usual fix.
